What I Read in October

It was so nice reading non-Harry Potter books this month (still love ya). I always try to read witchy books in October, though I'll read witchy books year round. It just feels right. Or something a bit darker. I definitely think I did just that. A good reading month. It's easier to hunker down when it gets darker earlier and it's chilly. There's nothing like cozying up with a blanket, hot chocolate, and a book. I'm winding down on my audio books as I'm walking less as the weather turns. I'm hoping to still have a few good days each week for awhile though. October was/is such a busy month!

I am at 61 of 62 books for the year. I will obviously be making this year’s reading goal! If you’re wanting to get in more books, I highly recommend audiobooks and poetry (if that’s your thing). Also, every book you read doesn’t have to be over 300 pages.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows by J.K. Rowling

The Invisible Hour by Alice Hoffman

I kind of wish there was more to this book. I really liked it and as an avid reader myself, really enjoyed how important books and reading were to the main character. It was kind of confusing how magic and time travel played throughout, but I could have just missed it by not paying attention as carefully as I should. It was a super quick and fun read and I really enjoy Hoffman's worlds.

Kitchen Confidential by Anthony Bourdain

I listened to this and Anthony did read it. Wow. He has/had quite the personality. I'm kind of interested in listening to his other books now. I learned some things I would have rather not known (but also glad I know...) about the kitchen end of the restaurant business, but this was great. As someone who really isn't into cooking and has never worked in a restaurant, it was so interesting to hear about his experience and how everything typically works. The hard work and dedication he put into his craft is plainly seen. Highly recommend giving this a listen.

The Social Media Bible by Lon Safko and David K. Brake

Okay, so I have had this book in my TBR for literal YEARS. It's an older book anyway as well. Honestly, it was probably extremely cutting edge when it was written. But it hasn't been updated like at all. Instagram wasn't even mentioned. There were some nice little general tidbits and interesting facts and QR codes that I didn't use. I looked at the website and it's a bit of a mess, I think. I feel like that's all that needs to be said. Just skip this one.

White Oleander by Janet Fitch

I have wanted to read this book for ages. And woah. It is very heavy, but it is so good. About a mother daughter relationship that is incredibly unhealthy. A girl's journey to adulthood in some of the worst circumstances. I found I was highlighting a lot of little blurbs that I felt deeply, but I can't decide if that is a good or a bad thing. Highly recommend.

Time Will Tell by Courtney Peppernell

I really adore Courtney's poetry. Reading through this book was like watching the past year unfold in front of me. How much I've learned and what I'm continuing to learn. I cried and smiled and generally had a good time.

In the Company of Witches by Auralee Wallace

This was really cute. I honestly wasn’t sure if it was going to be a good read, but it was cozy and sweet. It had a murder mystery and witchcraft and a small town - perfect for October. It is the first book in a series and I am considering continuing with it.

Hello, Molly!: A Memoir by Molly Shannon

This popped up in my audiobook recommendations. I enjoy Molly Shannon’s sense of humor, so I figured why not give it a listen. It’s always… interesting… to me hearing about the early lives of celebrities. She had a lot happen to her at a very early age and I bet her therapy bills are/were high. She’s definitely found a good life and I can appreciate her even more - especially in her time on SNL.

The Woman in Me by Britney Spears

Obviously I had to listen to this. I didn’t even wait for next audiobook credit, I bought this as an extra! I was so enthralled in this (as I was driving) that a police offer was behind me with lights flashing and I didn’t notice until he sounded his siren. Listening to this broke my heart. Britney, obviously, went through a lot, but hearing about how she was treated by her family, Hollywood, us… terrible. I feel like this is how I’ve felt after every pop sensation’s memoir, but Britney’s was definitely the most heart wrenching. I can’t even imagine not having control over my life, as an adult, for over a decade. I’m so glad she was able to get her justice and quite frankly, I’m surprised she made it through. I hope we’ve learned our lessons in how we treat women in media as opposed to men… but I don’t know if we’ve learned it enough.
