When I moved into The Apothecary last year, I had a stack of books in my TBR (to be read) pile that sat as high as my hip. I made myself not buy any books (except for my book club books) until I had finished the books in that particular pile. Well, July was the month that I made it through that entire stack! The stack you see in the photo above are all new books purchased very recently. I am so glad I finally made it through those, some of the books in the giant pile I have been needing to read for years.
I also put into place a way to ensure I'm getting through my "to read" list in goodreads in a slightly orderly fashion. I was finding that I was only reading books I had recently placed into the list and I have books from like 2016 that I want to read in there! So, I have to start at the beginning of the "to read" list and purchase a book from there if I want to purchase a book from the newer portion of the list. It's working out fabulously, I made it through two from the beginning of the list in July!
For audiobooks, I had gotten through everything that hadn't been read except one book. I truly love listening to them when I walk, so I decided to restart my subscription there. All in all, I feel like I'm back to normal reading where I find it enjoyable and get through a decent amount of reads. Hooray!
Happy Place by Emily Henry ⭐⭐⭐⭐
This was a super fun read! I enjoy Emily Henry's books - they're adorable. When I read this, I really wasn't sure if I was ready for a rom-com type book, but I love love and I love love stories. I think I enjoyed Book Lovers more, but it was still cute. I got through it really quickly and only got mad at the characters slightly.
Eight Hundred Grapes by Laura Dave ⭐⭐⭐
This was about a family and their vineyard. I think if I had read it back when I had added it to my goodreads list (meaning many years ago), I would have enjoyed it more. There was a lot of miscommunication and it was a bit annoying. All in all, it was a good read, but probably could have gone my life without reading it.
101 Essays that Will Change the Way You Think by Brianna Weist ⭐⭐⭐⭐
I tried to not read this entirely too quickly because I wanted to sit with it and think about it. Did I agree with every essay? No. I did find nuggets in a lot of the essays that really made me think about my life and how I want it to look. It's definitely something you should read, especially if you've been feeling weird about life lately. This is a book you can put down and come back to over time as well.
The Craft: How the Freemasons Made the Modern World by John Dickie ⭐⭐⭐
This was an audiobook. It was really cool to hear the history of the Freemasons, I really didn't have any idea. I was hoping to hear more sEcReTs, but obviously they're secrets for a reason. I enjoyed the narrator a lot. It was neat-o and a quick listen.
Valley of the Dolls by Jacqueline Susann ⭐⭐⭐⭐
This was a re-read for book club. I love this book. I think everyone should read it. It follows the lives of a few characters who become famous and what that does to them as they start popping pills. I feel like a lot of books focus on hard drugs and fame, but this specifically focuses on what prescription drugs can do to a person if used in a poor manner. Very fun, but the characters are a bit annoying.
What She Left Behind by Ellen Marie Wiseman ⭐⭐⭐⭐
I wanted to throw this book at the wall many times. Not because I didn't like it, but because everything in it was just so frustratingly sad. The book follows two women of around the same age in different years - 1920's and "today". The woman from today finds information about the woman from the 1920's and tries to unveil her story. She finds the woman was put into an insane asylum against her will by her parents and was forced to stay there. Like every other insane asylum, the patients were abused and it was awful, especially for the very sane women. Heartbreaking and, honestly, doesn't feel far from how people want or do treat women today.
