Other than the cooler temperatures and changing foliage, the best part about fall is the chance to pick apples and pumpkins. A trip or five to the local orchard is something I look forward to every fall season. I love visiting local orchards with friends and family with the occasional solo trip. Not only does it help support our local farms, but it's a way to get me out of the house and my nose out of a book.
My favorite location to visit is Pleasant View Orchard. I've been visiting this particular orchard since I would go with my parents as a kid. It just feels like home. There are always a fabulous number of apples to be picked (even later in the season) and riding on the tractor to the pumpkin patch is always fun. The best part is leaving the haul in the car and eating in the shop area. Refueling is necessary with an apple cider, nachos or a hot dog, and I always splurge on a few caramel apples for later.
I always try to layer when visiting an orchard. Since you're basically at the mercy of the elements, it's essential to be prepared for anything. And don't forget, you're going to be hauling apples and pumpkins everywhere and doing a lot of walking. It hadn't rained and wasn't going to rain, so I chose my favorite cognac boots. They were dusty after, but easy to clean. I would suggest a duck boot or rain boot mainly for orchards. There was a crispness to the air (fantastic), but the sun was still quite warm. This flannel shirt from J. Crew Factory is warm without feeling as if you're wrapped in a blanket. I love adding a vest as my top layer as I typically don't feel the need to remove it. My arms and legs don't get too cold, but I always need to layer my middle (yay science). It was truly a perfect day out. I also scored so many Golden Delicious apples!
